Welcome to the Volunteer Academic Mentoring Program (VAMP)!

The 87FSS Librar-e & Resource Commons on Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst offers a FREE tutor/academic assistance program. Students can receive coaching individually and/or in groups.

The mission of this program is to support our military personnel, their dependents, and our civilian employees in their college careers by providing academic assistance for traditional and distance learning courses.

How does VAMP work?
TUTORS:

Any base military personnel, spouses, civilians, DOD contractors, and students may volunteer their time to coach other students.  Tutors register with the VAMP Program Coordinator and commit to a minimum of two hours per week of mentoring.

STUDENTS:

Any base military personnel, spouses, civilians, DOD contractors who are students on base, may register with the VAMP Program Coordinator and request two hours per week of assistance.

Why VAMP?

The most successful students are those who have mastered three important skills.  They understand the differences between high school work and college level work; they have learned the skill of good time management; and they seek the support or help that they may need early in their academic career.

Perhaps the first and biggest benefit people get from volunteering is the satisfaction of incorporating service into their lives and making a difference in their community and country.  The intangible benefits alone—such as pride, satisfaction, and accomplishment—are worthwhile reasons to serve.  In addition, when we share our time and talents we:

  • Solve Problems
  • Strengthen Communities
  • Improve Lives
  • Connect to Others
  • Transform Our Own Lives
The VAMP Program

The VAMP Program will require a tutor/mentor to attend a 45-60 minute training session at the Joint Base Librar-e & Resource Commons.  This training allows tutors to see the study areas of the library and understand the print and electronic resources available to them, seven days a week.  After 20 hours of tutoring, they also receive a certificate of appreciation and a volunteer letter for school or career enhancement.

VAMP tutors will receive a name badge from the program and wear the badge during all their tutoring hours.  The VAMP Coordinator will match tutors with students, depending upon student needs.  All mentoring will be conducted at the Joint Base Librar-e and Resource Commons during normal hours of operation (subject to change).

Group coaching and sharing sessions will be scheduled monthly by the VAMP Coordinator.  All tutors and students may attend any and all group study sessions.
