87FSS Outdoor Recreation (ODR)
87FSS Outdoor Recreation (ODR) is open to all our valued customers - Service Members, Retirees, DoD Civilians and their immediate family members. ODR offers outdoor recreation trips, equipment rental, RV Storage Lot, FAMCAMP, Range, Recreational Parks and such.
All of your adventures start here! We offer information and suggestions on the best of New Jersey's recreational hot spots as well as out-of-state adventures for all your outdoors and sporting needs. Join us for fishing, whitewater rafting, surfing, parasailing, hiking, camping, rock climbing, skydiving, backpacking, hot air balloons, outdoor trips and much more!
Come try our 18-hole Disc Golf Course located at Laurel Pond (10th Street and Juliustown Road, JB MDL Dix). Use of course is FREE! Disc Golf kit rentals and scorecards available at ODR. Great way to get some fresh air, spend time on our trails, and challenge yourself and others to a fun game.
Need a Little Fishing or Hunting in Your Life?
Fishing: We have several lakes on and off base that offer great local fresh water fishing spots. NJ State License required prior permit application. Check in with ODR for stocked areas, regulation guides, permit information or to rent a pole. We regularly host deep sea ocean fishing charters Spring through Fall.
Hunting / Cantonment Archery Program (DCAM): Available for Active Duty Military and Federal Civilian Employees assigned to JB MDL and their dependents only. This program requires each to attend a yearly briefing, possess NJ Hunter Education, and JB MDL Permit to participate. Additional hunting and shooting sports available at FSS Range 14 and JB MDL Lakehurst.

Hunting OI / Safety Briefings at JB MDL
Persons interested in hunting on JB MDL must have a valid NJ state license and attend the corresponding orientation/safety briefing for the section they wish to hunt. 1) Dix Cantonment Archery McGuire (DCAM) 2) Dix Range Area (DRA) 3) Lakehurst (LKE) Once the appropriate briefing is attended, the required JB MDL hunting permit may be purchased.

Anyone wanting to hunt the on-base DCAM section of JB MDL must attend a briefing to be authorized to purchase a permit. Located at 87FSS Outdoor Recreation, Bldg. 6045 Doughboy Loop, JB MDL Dix. Free and open Active Duty Military and permanent federal employees assigned to JB MDL. Contractors and retired military personnel are not authorized to participate.
JB MDL Dix Range Area (DRA) Hunting OI/Safety Briefing
Anyone wanting to hunt the DRA section (JB MDL Dix Training / Range areas) of JB MDL must attend a briefing to be authorized to purchase a permit. Located at 87FSS Rod & Gun Club at 87FSS Range-14, JB MDL Dix. Free and open to Active Duty Military and general public. Free Community Garden Plots!
Open to all DoD ID holders, April 1 thru November 1 of each year. Raised-bed organic and non-organic garden plots available for the JB MDL community at no charge. Locations at JB MDL McGuire by Wacky World Playground (16 plots); JB MDL Dix off 4th Street, Colonial Plaza (16 plots), and JB MDL Lakehurst adjacent to the FSS Flight Deck (8 plots). Plots are 4’ x 12’ in size. Participants are responsible for all maintenance and care for plots and will complete a contract upon registration for stated policies.
Register on a first come-first serve basis at the FSS Outdoor Recreation, Bldg. 6045 Doughboy Loop. Max of 2 plots per person. 609.562.6667 or 609.562.4208.
Having a Party and Need Equipment? Want to go paddling on the local lakes? 87FSS ODR rents everything from canopies and camping tents to tables and chairs; inflatable bounce houses for your little ones' party or dunk tanks and charcoal/gas grills for your unit functions; canoes/kayaks, mountain bikes, skis/snowboards for your own cost outside the gate. - Call or stop in 87FSS ODR to check availability; certain items may not be available during special events. 24-hour notice required for full cancellation refunds. Cancellations within 24-hours forfeit deposit/payments.
- All reservations require full payment to secure your items. No voluntary holds allowed. We accept VISA, MasterCard and American Express. Guests are required to sign rental contracts at time of pick-up and drop-off and will be responsible for any damages or changes to condition of equipment occurred during rental period.
- All rental pick-up's will be available after 11am. Returns are due back by 10am. Late charges do apply at full daily fee until item is returned. Daily, Weekend, and Weekly rental rates available. Delivery rates available for most items and limited to on base locations only.
- Many large rental items require large vehicles or towing capabilities, please check with 87FSS ODR Staff at time of reservation for vehicle and transportation requirements.
Come rent your ski or snowboard equipment with us!
Available from December 1 thru April 1. Based on availability; equipment may not be available while ski/snowboard programs are scheduled. Please plan early and reserve in advance at 87FSS ODR Dix.
Did you know we also service ski and snowboard equipment? Let us sharpen hose edges, grind the base, and get a new coat of wax on those planks. Services available at 87FSS ODR Dix only. This is a drop-off service and can take up to several days to complete depending on queue and technician schedule.
Planning a camping trip or going canoeing?
87FSS ODR Lakehurst has canoes, kayaks and jon boats along with camping gear, tents, coolers and more. Wanna play? Tennis rackets, footballs, soccer balls, softball equipment, horseshoe equipment and more are all available for rental.
Recreational Vehicle Storage Lots (RVSL)
Located conveniently on JB MDL Dix and JB MDL McGuire, our two secure storage lots are available on a first come, first serve basis with priority for Active Duty Service Members. To inquire on availability, please contact 87FSS ODR.
Single Space (up to 22'): $15 / month Double Space (up to 44'): $30 / month Storage Locker (10'x10'): $60 / month
- Participants must be assigned/attached to JB MDL, or live within the local area. Updated contact info must stay current to uphold contract. Auto-billing occurs on the 1st of each month; current credit card required for every agreement. All participants will have own assigned access code to enter secured storage lot.
- Only currently insured and registered vehicles in working condition allowed to store. Vehicle upkeep and updated documents/contact info is owner's responsibility. Violations will be addressed, notice attempts will be documented and can result in removal of vehicle and forfeit of spot with no refunds. Any towing expenses or impound fees will be participant's responsibility.
87FSS hosts two RV Camp Sites located at Willow Pond (8 spots on-installation) on JB MDL Dix and 87FSS Range 14 (12 spots off-installation). Both campgrounds have electricity, water and waste dump station. Camp Dix (6 spots) primitive tent campsite is located along the Willow Pond peninsula off of 8th Street, JB MDL Dix. These include a fire pit and picnic table per site. Max of 8 guests per site. Porto Potty restroom available in parking lot (seasonally) or restrooms located at Willow Pond RV Camp Site. Fire extinguishers available at 87FSS ODR included with rental. No portable water available on site. Please practice "Leave No Trace" Ethics.
- Payment required in full at time of reservation.
- All guests are to check in to 87FSS ODR to sign contracts and get window placard.
- Check-In is after 1pm on arrival; Check-Out is no later than 11am on departure.
- No back-to-back reservations; participants must depart FamCamp for 24 hours before making another reservation.
- We require 24-hour notice for any cancellations for refunds.

Skylarker Charter Fishing Trip
Sunday June 16 (Father’s Day); Saturday July 20; Sunday August 11; Saturday October 12.
$60/person for Active Duty and family members; $75 for all other DoD ID holders.
Registration opens April 1 thru April 30 for Active Duty; May 1 for all other DoD ID holders.
Detailed info sheet provided sign up. This trip is appropriate for ages 6 and up. Price includes round trip transportation, fishing fare, poles and all bait. The trip departs FSS ODR, bldg. 6045 Doughboy Loop promptly at 4:45am, returning no later than 5:00pm. FSS Outdoor Recreation charters the 70' Skylarker fishing boat for an exciting day of fishing for whatever the mighty Atlantic has to offer! Bring tip money for the mate and FSS ODR will provide the coolers for your catch. Personal plastic coolers are okay and participants must provide their own food/drinks. 609.562.6667 or 609.562.4208.
Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) Boarding Clinic at Willow Pond
Friday July 5 from 4 to 6pm at Willow Pond, 8th Street/Camp Dix entrance. Registration starts April 1 at FSS ODR Bldg. 6045 Doughboy Loop.
Stand -Up Paddle (SUP) boarding is a growing water sport that provides fitness, balance, fun and relaxation. Join the FSS ODR at Willow Pond for instruction and introduction to SUP. Learn how to carry, size, balance and control a paddleboard, safety equipment, paddle strokes, sizing, transporting and local areas to paddle. You will have some various paddleboards on hand for trying out. Free, registration is mandatory with a maximum of 10 slots available. Youth ages 12+ up. All participants require to wear a lifejacket; children must have adults present.
Off-Shore Tuna Fishing Overnight Trip
Sunday September 15 to Monday September 16. Registration opens April 1 – May 31 for Active Duty; open for all other DoD ID holders from June 1 – August 20. $175 person for Active Duty and family members; $225 for all other DoD ID holders. Cost includes round trip transportation, fishing charter, poles and all bait. FSS ODR charters the 85' Queen Mary fishing boat out of Point Pleasant for an exciting night of off-shore tuna fishing! Trip departs FSS ODR, Bldg. 6045 Doughboy Loop promptly at 10:45pm, returning no later than 8pm. Boat departs by midnight on Sunday and returns by 6pm on Monday for 18-hour charter. Participants responsible for own meals/ beverages and tip money for mates. Small personal coolers are okay. Must be paid in full to reserve spot by August 20 or until trip fills up. Waitlist will be contacted after August 20, if available. Trip is nonrefundable after August 20. Ages 18+ years old; max of 22 participants.
Allaire State Park Day Hike
Saturday June 1, 8:30am to 4pm.
Open to all DoD ID holders, $15 per person. Register between May 1 and May 28.
Trip departs ODR Bldg. 6045 Doughboy Loop at 8:30am and returns approximately 4pm. Celebrate National Trails Day with FSS Outdoor Recreation. Come take a hike as we explore the pine-oak forests for a 4.5 mile beginner-moderate walk. Please dress for the weather, wear hiking shoes, and bring water/snacks, picnic lunch along for the walk. Fee includes van transportation, guide, and entry to state park. Max of 14 participants.
Black River NY White Water Raft and Camp Weekend
Friday June 21 thru Sunday June 23. $95 for Active duty/family members; $115 for all other DoD ID holders. Priority registration/payment for active duty/family members: May 1 thru May 12; all other DoD ID holders May 13 thru June 6. No refunds or cancellations after June 6. Must be signed up by June 15.
Fee includes van transportation, some basic camp and recreational gear, tent accommodations for 2 nights, 4 group meals, and white water rafting experience.
Trip departs 9am Friday June 21 / Returns 6pm Sunday June 23. Trip details sheet available at time of registration. Group limited to 12 participants. NEW for 2019! Join 87FSS for a wild ride and fun weekend rafting the Black River and Camping at Ft. Drum NY (tent accommodations). The park consists of trails, recreational sports, and a beachfront with swimming and boating available. On Saturday, White Water Challengers rafting down Class III-IV rapids for 4 hours, including a snack of cookies and lemonade, an end of day cookout. The rest of the afternoon will be free recreational time. We will depart by 11am on Sunday and return no later than 6pm.
Trip is suited for ages 15+ and all participants must be competent swimmers. Previous paddling and river experience is suggested. Not a beginner’s trip; requiring intermediate to advanced physical exertion.
LBI Parasailing and Beach Day
Saturday June 29, 9am to 5pm.
Active duty members/dependents: $40 per person, all other DoD ID holders: $55 per person. Price includes transportation.
Priority registration for active duty/family members: May 1 thru May 13; all other DoD ID holders: May 13 thru June 20.
Trip departs FSS Outdoor Recreation, Bldg. 6045 Doughboy Loop at 9am, returning approximately 5pm. Enjoy an experience of a lifetime! Soar high above famous Long Beach Island and its beautiful beaches as you gently glide up to 500ft above the coastline.
Trip for ages 6 and up, maximum of 12 participants. Recommend wearing a t-shirt and swim trunks for flight as you may get wet. All food is on your own, there will be a time to eat lunch, walk around, shop or relax on the beach at LBI. Bring extra cash for beach fee. A detailed trip information will be provided at time of registration.
Canoe Clinic at Willow Pond
Friday May 31, 4 to 6pm at Willow Pond, 8th Street/Camp Dix entrance. Registration starts April 1 at FSS ODR, Bldg. 6045 Doughboy Loop, JB MDL Dix. Youth ages 8 and up. Staff provides instruction and introduction to canoeing. Learn how to carry, size, enter/exit and use a canoe. We will teach you some safety equipment, paddle strokes, transporting, local areas to paddle and etiquette using canoes to practice. Free, registration is mandatory with a max of 10 slots available. All participants require to wear a lifejacket; children must have adults present.

Attention adrenaline junkies: "Ultimate Adventure" trip to Skydive Jersey. During a tandem skydive, you are securely fastened to your tandem instructor. Must be 18 years and older and weight restrictions apply to participate (Males less than 230lbs /Females less than 215lbs).

Youth Fishing Derby JB MDL Lakehurst
Saturday May 18, 8am to 12pm at Bass Lake, JB MDL Lakehurst.
Free and open to all DoD ID holders age 15 and under (parent must accompany child).
Pre-registration March 1 – May 17. Same day registration available. Prizes for the biggest fish! Derby is rain or shine, actual fishing from 9 to 11am. Experience the thrill of catching your 1st fish or your 100th! Participants must provide their own fishing gear including poles, bait and tackle. Limited tackle and bait will be provided at the event. On-site registration open 8 to 9:45am day of event; all participants must check in day-of to receive a drawing ticket. No prize fish accepted after 11am. Largest fish-by-length awarded in four age categories: 4 and under, 5-8 years, 9-12 years, and 13-15 years. Drawing giveaway follows.
Complimentary breakfast, refreshments, and a hot dog BBQ provided. Participants encouraged to get to the lake early due to limited space around the shoreline. Children may fish the rest of the day after the event.

Annual FSS Family Campout
Friday & Saturday, August 2 & 3, beginning at 3:00pm, Doughboy Field, JB MDL Dix (Rain Date: August 9 & 10).
Free and open to all DoD ID holders.
Bring the family out for an evening of tent camping and a variety of fun activities run throughout the camp including BBQ dinner, movie on the lawn, popcorn, games, rock climbing wall, Go-Karts, Mini-Golf, Batting Cages, sports, Bounce Houses, fire pits, and of course S’mores! Breakfast the next morning. How much does them cost? All free!
Check-In/Registration and tent set up begins at 3:00pm on Friday.
Pre-registration begins July 1 at 87FSS Outdoor Recreation. Same day registration is available only if space allows; so hurry and reserve your spot!
