87FSS Outdoor Recreation JB MDL Dix

Open 7 days a week, 87FSS Outdoor Recreation (ODR) on Doughboy Loop offers many unique opportunities to the JB MDL community. Customers can rent a pavilion for unit organizational days, BBQ’s or family picnics. Passing through the area with a R.V.? Why not stay at Willow Pond Family R.V. Campground. John Mann Park Closure: As of 2/16/2018, John Mann Park community playground located on JB MDL Dix will be closed until furthers notice. Closures are due to the age and deterioration of the playground equipment that will require them to be upgraded or repaired. For those in base housing, there may be playgrounds provided in neighborhoods. There is also a newly renovated playground known as Wacky World, located on JB MDL McGuire behind the Base Theater that is also available to the JB MDL community for use. Updates on the affected playgrounds will be provided as they become available.

Events at Outdoor Recreation
Indoor Climbing Nights

Open to all DoD ID holders. Select Thursday evenings January thru April are Military Appreciation Indoor Climbing evenings at Rockville Climbing Center, Hamilton, NJ, from 5 to 9pm! $20 for active duty; $30 for all other DoD ID holders (ID check required). Retirees and veterans with valid ID receive discounted rates. Price includes climbing pass, shoes, harness, and van transportation. Self-belay systems make it easy for solo-climbers to clip in and self-climb. Meet at 87FSS ODR Bldg. 6045 Doughboy Loop for 5pm, return by 9pm. Seating is limited, 4 person minimum, and pre-registration required:

Thursday, January 17: pre register by January 15.
Thursday, February 21: pre register by February 19.
Thursday, March 21: pre register by March 19.
Thursday, April 25: pre register by April 23.

Saturday, January 19. $55 for active duty & family members; $65 for all other DoD ID holders. Registration closes January 15. Kick off ski and snowboard season with 87FSS Outdoor Recreation! Enjoy skiing or snowboarding on over 86 acres of slopes, trails, and terrain parks at Bear Creek Mountain Resort. 8-hour lift ticket, Bus transportation, and rental equipment (ski/poles or board, boots, and helmet). Bus departs 87FSS ODR Bldg. 6045 Doughboy Loop at 6:30am and returns NLT 7:30pm.*If planning on utilizing ODR rental equipment, each member must be measured/sized for equipment prior to 15 January to guarantee equipment availability* Group lessons available for additional fee and must be added by 15 January. Blue Mountain Ski Day

Saturday, January 26. Sign up starts January 2. Registration closes 22 January; $55 for active duty & dependents; $65 for all other DoD ID holders. Join 87FSS Outdoor Recreation to ski and ride at Blue Mountain, PA. Fee includes 8-hour lift ticket, bus transportation, and rental equipment (ski/poles or board, boots, and helmet). Bus departs 87FSS ODR Bldg. 6045 at 6:30am and returns NLT 7:30pm.*If planning on utilizing 87FSS ODR rental equipment, each member must be measured/sized for equipment prior 22 January to guarantee equipment availability* Group lessons available for additional fee and must be added by 22 January. Saturday February 2. $20, open to all DoD ID holders. Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest, Philadelphia’s largest outdoor ice skating rink and winter wonderland, is a must do in the area. Public Skating for 1.5-2 hours included. Fee includes transportation, admission, and skate rental. Participant responsible for all food/beverage and personal purchases. Additional details available at registration. Departs 87FSS ODR Bldg. 6045 Doughboy Loop at 1:30pm, returning approximately 7:30pm. Limited to the first 25 to sign up!

Winter Camping Overnight at Bass River State Forest

Saturday February 9 and Sunday February 10. $35, open to all DoD ID holders. *Mandatory Pre-trip meeting will be held Thursday January 31 at 5:15pm to discuss plans, packing list, expectations, meals, gear and answer your questions*. Come experience a winter camping trip! We will be departing Saturday and returning Sunday afternoon. Great first timer’s experience for those who want to explore the outdoors in winter and get an introduction to winter camping. We will have tent accommodations and lean-to (3 sided) shelter as sleeping options. Shelter offers wood burning stove and fire pit for some relief from the cold and a warming area to gather around. Daytime activities will include optional guided hikes, outdoor living skill clinics, and lots of fresh air. Fee includes van transportation, tent/ lean-to campsite, some rental equipment, group meals, and your favorite Outdoor Recreation guides. Participant responsible for all clothing/equipment, and personal snacks/drinks. Additional details and suggested packing list available at registration.

West Point Overnight Ski Trip & Tour

Saturday February 16 thru Sunday February 17. Single/$180, Double/$250, Triple/$285, Quad/$300 per room. Priority registration for active duty and family members January 2 thru 13; open to all DoD ID holders thereafter. Must be signed up and paid prior to February 7. A pre-trip meeting is held Thursday February 7 at 87FSS ODR Bldg. 6045 Doughboy Loop at 5:15pm. All guests advised to attend; at least 1 member of your group must be present in order to participate. An overnight trip to the Victor Constant Ski Slope at the USMA at West Point, NY where the main activity is skiing and snowboarding. Overnight lodging is at the Five Star Inn, Army lodging adjacent to West Point. There are full kitchens in all the rooms and a continental breakfast is served in the morning. Skiing available on Saturday only.   Participants should be sized for their equipment at time of signup or prior to pre-trip meeting. *Participants provide all food. The bus departs 87FSS ODR at 6:30am on Saturday February 16 and arrive back to the base at approximately 5pm on Sunday February 17. Fee includes lift ticket, bus transportation, one night lodging and rental equipment (ski/poles or board, boots, and helmet). *If planning on utilizing 87FSS ODR rental equipment, each member must be measured/sized for equipment prior February 7 to guarantee equipment availability* Participant responsible for all clothing/equipment, food/beverage, and personal purchases. Saturday March 2. $75 active duty & family members; $85 for DoD ID holders. Deadline to register: February 26. Come ski and ride with 87FSS Outdoor Recreation! Killington VT Weekend Ski Trip

Thursday March 14 thru Sunday March 17. Single room $395, Double room $500, Triple room $675, Quad room $740. Additional person in Quad 4+ person room $150. Open to all DoD ID holders (pricing subject to change). Priority registration for active duty and family members January 2 thru 19; open to all DoD ID holders thereafter. Signup deadline is COB March 4; the pre-trip meeting held Thursday 7 March at Outdoor Recreation, Bldg. 6045 Doughboy Loop at 5:15pm. Attendance is mandatory for all adult guests participating. Three nights/four days in Killington, VT for downhill skiing, snowboarding, and a ridiculous amount of fun! Lodging at the Cascades Lodge adjacent to the mountain. Amenities include fireside lounge and pub, pool table, heated indoor pool and whirlpool. Skiing on Friday and Saturday only - Thursday and Sunday are travel days. Participants can purchase lessons at time of signup for an additional cost (ages 7+). Price includes 3 nights lodging, Friday & Saturday lift ticket, rental equipment (ski/poles or board, boots, and helmet) and roundtrip motor coach transportation. Depart 87FSS ODR at 7am Thursday and returning approximately 5pm Sunday. Hot breakfast is included Friday thru Sunday morning at the Cascades Lodge. All other meals on your own, gratuity for bus driver not included. *If planning on utilizing 87FSS ODR rental equipment, each member must be measured/sized for equipment prior 9 March to guarantee equipment availability* Group lessons available for additional fee and must be added by 9 March. Gunks Trip 042019
GUnks Rock Climbing Overnight Trip

Saturday April 27 and Sunday April 28.

Active Duty: $185 per person; all other DoD ID holders: $225 per person. Active duty priority registration February 1- 15; open to all other DoD ID holders thereafter. Camping and Rock Climbing trip to the Shawangunks in New York. Group camping on Saturday night and departing Sunday morning to the climbing area. Campground dinner on Saturday night and breakfast Sunday morning are included in cost. A full day of climbing Sunday with Alpine Endeavors (AMGA accredited; ratio 4:1). After the climb Sunday we make the drive back. Trip departs FSS ODR 8am Saturday April 27, returning approximately 8pm Sunday April 28. Two pre-requisite evening climbing sessions in an indoor gym offered April 11 & 25 - departs FSS ODR at 5pm, return by 8pm. Attendance at minimum one is mandatory for trip participation. Menu, packing list, experience level, recreation possibilities on Saturday and further details discussed during the pre-trip meeting Tuesday, April 16, 5-6pm. Everyone participating must be in attendance. Trip limited to 12 participants ages 8+. Fee includes van transportation, tent campsite for 1 night, camping equipment, full day climbing experience, 2 group meals and 1-night belay/climbing clinic. Minimum 4, max of 12 accepted. Shared platform tent camping only.

Youth Fishing Derby JB MDL Dix

Saturday April 6, 8am to 12pm at Laurel Pond, Juliustown Road and 10th Street, JB MDL Dix.

Free and open to all DoD ID holders age 15 and under (parent must accompany child). 

Pre-registration March 1 – April 5. Same day registration available. Prizes for the biggest fish! Derby is rain or shine, actual fishing from 9 to 11am. Experience the thrill of catching your 1st fish or your 100th! Participants must provide their own fishing gear including poles, bait and tackle. Limited tackle and bait will be provided at the event. On-site registration open 8 to 9:45am day of event; all participants must check in day-of to receive a drawing ticket. No prize fish accepted after 11am. Largest fish-by-length awarded in four age categories: 4 and under, 5-8 years, 9-12 years, and 13-15 years. Drawing giveaway follows.

Complimentary breakfast, refreshments, and a hot dog BBQ provided. Participants encouraged to get to the pond early due to limited space around the shoreline. Children may fish the rest of the day after the event.

Laurel Pond is open for fishing to children 15 and under. NO ADULTS ALLOWED TO FISH AT ANY TIME IN LAUREL POND.

Hunting OI / Safety Briefings at JB MDL

Persons interested in hunting on JB MDL must have a valid NJ state license and attend the corresponding orientation/safety briefing for the section they wish to hunt. 1. Dix Cantonment Archery McGuire (DCAM) 2. Dix Range Area (DRA) 3. Lakehurst (LKE) Once the appropriate briefing is attended, the required JB MDL hunting permit may be purchased. Recurring Thursdays thru January 2018, 11am - 12pm. Anyone wanting to hunt the on-base DCAM section of JB MDL must attend a briefing to be authorized to purchase a permit. Located at 87FSS Outdoor Recreation, Bldg. 6045 Doughboy Loop, JB MDL Dix. Free and open Active Duty Military and permanent federal employees assigned to JB MDL. Contractors and retired military personnel are not authorized to participate. 

JB MDL Dix Range Area (DRA) Hunting OI/Safety Briefing

November 1, 11, 15 & 25 at 6pm. Anyone wanting to hunt the DRA section (JB MDL Dix Training / Range areas) of JB MDL must attend a briefing to be authorized to purchase a permit. Located at 87FSS Rod & Gun Club at Range-14, JB MDL Dix. Free and open to Active Duty Military and general public. Any Active Duty and family members new to JB MDL or returning deployment or TDY that could not attend pre-season briefings may contact 87FSS Rod & Gun Club, 609.562.4676.

JB MDL Lakehurst Hunting OI/Safety Briefing

Active Duty Military may contact Natural Resources office to schedule a briefing. Anyone wanting to hunt the JB MDL Lakehurst section (Training areas) of JB MDL must attend a briefing to be authorized to purchase a permit. Free and open to Active Duty military, Retired Military, and DoD ID Civilians. Any Active Duty and family members new to JB MDL or returning deployment or TDY that could not attend pre-season briefings may contact 87FSS Rod & Gun Club to schedule a briefing. Having a party and need equipment?

ODR rents everything from canopy and camping tents to tables and chairs, inflatable bounce houses and sumo suits, canoes/kayaks, mountain bikes and skis/snowboards, dunk tanks, charcoal or gas grills and the list goes on.

Need space to store a recreational vehicle? ODR manages 355 R.V. storage spaces for any type of vehicle.

ODR also offers adventure trips such as skydiving, horseback riding, deep sea fishing, canoeing/kayaking, downhill skiing/ snowboarding, and much more. Both day and overnight trips are offered. Inquire about setting up a trip for a unit, family or group of friends; we will accommodate your needs. ODR also offers annual special events such as a Kiddie Trout Fishing Derby on the opening day of Trout season in April and a FSS Family Campout night the second Friday in August.

87FSS ODR JB MDL Lakehurst has canoes, kayaks and jon boats along with camping gear, tents, coolers and more. Wanna play? Tennis rackets, footballs, soccer balls, softball equipment, horseshoe equipment and more are all available for rental.

ODR at JB MDL Lakehurst is open to all JB MDL ID cardholders and is located in the Fitness Center Building 123 on Severyns Road.
